A few weeks ago I got an email from a guy called Eric. He mentioned some of my early works for Private, as they still produced their nice vignette movies called “Private Reality” or later “Private XXX”. After my response to him, where I told him more about some circumstances for the shooting of the clip “Club Underground”, from Private DVD “Insatiable Sex Dolls”, I got an email back from him and I was so touched by his appreciating of my work, that I wanted to respond to him directly in my Blog.Here his emal:
Hi Tom,Great to hear from you. Thanks so much for taking the time to reply – much appreciated. I’m just glad that I could give you a compliment about your work. As you say, it’s a shame that Private made so many bad creative decisions in the last few years. I really miss the ‘golden age’! There’s too much cheap, ugly and unimaginative porn around now, whereas your work was always full of atmosphere and art. As an example, there’s a moment in Club Underground where we see a bead of sweat trickling down the dark-haired girl’s nose – it’s a tiny detail, but it adds an element of erotic reality to the scene. I’m glad that you think that the days of the nice productions are only over ‘momentarily’ – that gives me hope! I do have one question for you, actually. I’ve always been fascinated by the behind-the-scenes of porn, so I’ve often wondered – how much of the action in a scene is storyboarded or choreographed in advance? Or do you improvise the shots/angles as the action happens?Take Club Underground. Why the decision to let the blonde girl wank the guy to climax? Was that always the way you wanted to end the scene or did it occur to you as you filmed it? Do the girls get a chance to suggest moves? I’d be interested to know.

Thank you very much again for your email, Eric. It gives me again the evidence, that against the common opinon of the Big Production Companies, there are still Porn Consumers out there, which appreciate some quality and created atmosphere in the movies/scenes. 
But as you can imagine, that also has its price in time (and money). F.e.: at the period, where I shot “Club Underground” in Prague (around 2003/4), we could afford, to take one day time for the shooting of only one scene. That sounds already TODAY for myself like an utopic science fiction fairy tale of my grand father, 
, if I compare that to the actual situation of my shootings from sometimes 4 to 5 scenes on one day day. But to your question about the storyboarding or choreography of a scene like that:
1) At this time period I used to make castings before a shooting, to get some first impression of the actresses personality. Sometimes from a casting it could happen, that I was getting inspired for something special through the personality or character of a girl. The black hair Tanya s naturality catched me immediately and my choice for her for pretty clear from first moment.
2) For these vignettes I never had real script or “storyboard”. Honestly I have let myself mostly inspired by the actors and the location, that I have chosen for. Having one of the best camera man in this genre at that time, which understood also the way, how to catch the most intense moments as best, made it pretty easy, to setup scenes, even on unusual places. 
Then I tried mostly, to let the chemistry play between the actors, and I tell you, it mostly worked. That scene is one evidence.
3) For the sex scene itself I have a small groundstructure idea, depending on the “story” situation, but when the people are in the sexual activity, I try as much as possible, to let the scene “roll”. If something finally really doesn t look nice or doesn t work, or I don t like (f.e.. spitting at girl, or hands on her throat too strong), then I intervene. Also for the end (Cumshot) I didn t had a real plan, but sometimes, like it was here, when peoples chemistry fit, then also they offer me out of the action some idea, which I follow them just with the camera. As it was here maybe.
